All of Bethlehem Baptist Church and attendees of the Desiring God National Conference are invited to the BCS Inaugural Convocation.

We believe this will be a very special evening as we corporately and publicly dedicate BCS to the service of the Lord. In addition to praise and worship of the Lord, we will be formally installing John Piper as Chancellor, Tim Tomlinson as President, and our faculty. There will be a special message from Dr. Albert Mohler Jr., and Dr. Piper will be speaking as well. In all, this should be an evening that we will look back on with gratitude in the years to come as a time of dedicating and consecrating BCS as an institution devoted to the Word of God and the raising up of the next generation of leaders for the sake of the church. Once again, we would be honored and blessed if you would join us for this special event in the life of BCS.

BCS Inaugural Convocation

On Sunday, October 3, 2010, Bethlehem College and Seminary will hold an Inaugural Convocation. This event will be a celebration and dedication of the birth of an institution that we want to last 100 years. Both John Piper and R. Albert Mohler, Jr. will be speaking.

The convocation will follow the “Think: The Life of the Mind & the Love of God” Desiring God National Conference at 7:00pm in the sanctuary of Bethlehem Baptist Church. The conference and the BCS Inaugural Convocation are closely tied together through celebration of the life of the mind.

BCS Professors Publish Multiple Book Reviews in Themelios

Two Bethlehem College and Seminary professors published book reviews in the latest edition of the journal Themelios.

Brian Tabb, Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies, reviewed Paul the Missionary: Realities, Strategies and Methods.

Jason C. Meyer, Assistant Professor of New Testament, published three book reviews in the latest edition of the journal Themelios. Meyer reviewed Christopher A. Beetham’s Echoes of Scripture in the Letter of Paul to the Colossians, Paul Unbound: Other Perspectives on the Apostle, edited by Mark D. Given, and Anthony C. Thiselton’s The Living Paul: An Introduction to the Apostle’s Life and Thought.

Bethlehem College and Seminary is seeking an Administrative Assistant. This is a part-time role providing general administrative assistance for the Vice President of Administration and the Director of Undergraduate Studies. General administrative tasks include correspondence, keeping records, making appointments, and carrying out similar tasks. This position will provide other clerical support for the BCS staff as needed. The position is designed to be 20 hours per week. We are seeking a joyful person who desires meaningful employment combined with the freedom of a reduced schedule.

Information Technology Volunteer Needed

Bethlehem College and Seminary is seeking a volunteer to assist with IT (information technology) needs in the BCS Library. This volunteer would provide technical knowledge and skill installing computers, software, configuring them for student access, and configuring them for network access and printing. This volunteer must have experience with Apple Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, networking systems and protocols, and Windows 7. Experience with Active Directory is a plus.

The bulk of volunteer time needed would be in mid- to late-July and August.

Tuition Set for Fall 2010

At the recent BCS Board meeting, tuition for the 2010–2011 academic year was set. Undergraduate tuition was set at $150 per credit hour. The full program cost for the Master of Divinity degree (beginning in 2010) is $16,000 for the degree. (The costs for prior year M.Div. programs do not change.) Meyer Book Reviews in Themelios

Jason C. Meyer, assistant professor of New Testament at Bethlehem College and Seminary, recently published three book reviews in the latest edition of the journal Themelios. Meyer reviewed Ron du Preez’s Judging the Sabbath: Discovering What Can’t Be Found in Colossians 2:16, J. R. Daniel Kirk’s, Unlocking Romans: Resurrection and the Justification of God, and Douglas J. Moo’s The Letters to the Colossians and to Philemon. The same volume of Themelios also features a gracious review of Meyer’s book, The End of the Law: Mosaic Covenant in Pauline Theology. There is also a review of The Cradle, the Cross, and the Crown: An Introduction to the New Testament. Meyer contributed the chapter on the prison epistles for this volume.

Tabb Presents at Regional SBL

Brian Tabb, Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at BCS, presented a paper at the Society of Biblical Literature regional meeting on April 9. Brian's paper (PDF), “Johannine Fulfillment Language,” attempts to explain what John's Gospel means in saying that Jesus’ suffering and death take place “in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled.”

Joe Rigney—Disputatio

Joe Rigney is Instructor of Theology and Christian Worldview at Bethlehem College and Seminary. He’s written and edited a number of study guides for Desiring God, the resource ministry of John Piper. He completed a B.A. in Speech Communication at Texas A&M University and the Vocational Elder Training Program at Bethlehem Baptist Church. He and his wife and their remarkable little boy live underground in Minneapolis.

On March 26, Joe Rigney delivered a lecture at New Saint Andrews College in Moscow, Idaho, on the topic “Educating Without Edwards? A Concordist Commendation for New Saint Andrews.”

Bethlehem College and Seminary presents “An Introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls” with guest lecturer Dan Gurtner (professor at Bethel Seminary).

Listen to a brief overview of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The lecture is a summary of the discovery of the Scrolls, the site at Qumran, and the religious sectarians who composed them. Dan surveys some of the contents of the scrolls and comments on their importance for the study of the text of the Old Testament and the Jewish world of Jesus in the New Testament.

Dead Sea Scrolls Lectures

Bethlehem College and Seminary presents “An Introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls” with guest lecturer Dan Gurtner (professor at Bethel Seminary). All are welcome.

This lecture is offered twice at Bethlehem.

First, as the Wednesday Connection main teaching option for adults in the Sanctuary at the North Campus (5151 Program Ave, Mounds View MN 55112) on Wednesday, March 17. Join us before the lecture at 6:15pm for a time of worship.

Second, this lecture is also being offered during lunchtime on Monday, March 22, at 12:30pm at the Downtown Campus. (Note: 12:30pm is the correct time.)

Attendees will be able to hear a brief overview of the Dead Sea Scrolls in light of an upcoming exhibit at the Science Museum. The lecture will begin with a summary of the discovery of the Scrolls, the site at Qumran, and the religious sectarians who composed them.

We will survey some of the contents of the scrolls and comment on their importance for the study of the text of the Old Testament and the Jewish world of Jesus in the New Testament.

Griffith Sermon at Bethlehem

Jason Meyer Named New Testament Professor

Bethlehem College and Seminary announces Jason C. Meyer as Assistant Professor of New Testament beginning Fall 2010. Dr. Meyer brings to BCS a wide range of teaching, writing, preaching, missions, and pastoral experience. He has a passion to proclaim the whole counsel of God in both the church and the academy for the glory of God. He longs to see the nations worship God, who alone is worthy of worship. The mission statement of Bethlehem is the mission statement of His life: to spread a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples.

Meyer has authored a book on the difference in Paul between the old covenant and the new covenant, entitled The End of the Law: Mosaic Covenant in Pauline Theology (B & H Academic, 2009), contributed the chapter on the prison epistles in The Cradle, the Cross, and the Crown: An Introduction to the New Testament (B & H Academic, 2009), and is presently writing a biblical and practical theology of preaching (Crossway).

Prior to coming to Bethlehem, Meyer was the Dean of Chapel and Assistant Professor of New Testament and Greek at Louisiana College in Pineville, LA from 2006-2009. Meyer also taught New Testament for the Spring 2010 semester at the Evangelical Theological College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Before this, he served as the pastor of Orville Baptist Church while completing his Ph.D. in New Testament under Thomas R. Schreiner at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY.

This ministry appointment feels like a homecoming to the Meyers, who studied at Bethlehem from 1999–2001 as part of The Bethlehem Institute. At Bethlehem College and Seminary, Meyer will give oversight in the area of New Testament and teach and write for the seminary in his areas of specialization: Paul’s epistles and theology, the Law and the New Testament, preaching, biblical theology, and Greek language.

Jason and his wife, Cara, have been married since 1999, which have been the best ten years of their lives. God has blessed them with two daughters, Gracie and Allie, and they are in the process of adopting two boys from Ethiopia. As a family, the Meyers enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, sports, and music.
